AI-Powered Surveillance: The Future of Security is Already Here

Not so long ago, the high-tech surveillance we saw in films felt like pure science fiction. Cameras that could track individuals across a city, systems that could identify threats before they happened: those ideas belonged in dystopian thrillers, not in our world.

But here we are. AI-powered surveillance isn’t coming; it has already arrived and is evolving at an astonishing pace.

For decades, CCTV technology improved in slow, predictable steps. A sharper image, better storage, and wider coverage. Useful, yes, but hardly revolutionary. Now, that’s changed. And for those in the security industry, it’s time to sit up and pay attention because this is happening fast.

Like so many in our industry, we keep a sharp eye on new technologies. We attend major industry events, even sending delegates to events in far-flung places like Intersec in Dubai, to keep our fingers on the pulse. It was there this year that this acceleration became most apparent.

Over the past months and longer, all the camera manufacturers we engage with have been talking up their advanced AI-enhanced systems. Artificial intelligence is making its way into many technologies, but in CCTV, its impact is particularly dramatic.

The next generation of these systems do more than record; they perceive. They can recognise suspicious behaviour and identify weapons. Some systems incorporate thermal imaging, allowing them to detect weapons even if hidden beneath clothing. It’s no wonder AI is becoming the must-have feature in CCTV.

The benefits are too significant to ignore. Smarter cameras, better detection, fewer blind spots. Every major manufacturer is integrating AI, and from this point forward, the technology is only going to improve.

But what does this mean for CCTV operators? As humans, we are fallible; anyone can miss key moments in realtime. AI doesn’t. Instead of replacing operators, AI acts as a powerful support tool. An extra set of digital eyes that never tire, never blink, and never get distracted. It analyses footage in real time, raising alerts to human operators the moment something unusual happens, and it does so with incredible accuracy.

AI-assisted search functions promise to make security investigations far more efficient. Instead of manually sifting through hours of footage, operators can simply describe a suspect’s appearance, such as a red backpack or a grey jacket, and retrieve relevant clips in seconds.

What once took hours of painstaking review can now be done in moments, allowing teams to act faster and more decisively.

Adoption of these systems will be fast, and doesn’t require major infrastructure changes at all. Instead of replacing entire systems, they offer AI-powered processing units  – small, powerful ‘AI boxes’ that can be plugged into existing CCTV networks.

These devices allow AI to look out at the world through the existing cameras. The existing hardware remains in place while the software does the heavy lifting. This is low-barrier, high-impact, and that’s a recipe for rapid adoption.

We will need to work closely with their IT and compliance departments, and the AI specialists within those teams, to ensure AI-enhanced surveillance is implemented safely and effectively. Having the expertise to manage the technology, train staff, and navigate evolving regulations is essential.

But even smaller businesses stand to benefit. Many AI-enhanced surveillance solutions are becoming more accessible, with cloud-based services that eliminate the need for in-house expertise, making the technology more readily available.

As the science fiction writer William Gibson famously said, ‘The future is already here – it’s just not evenly distributed.’ Right now, AI-powered CCTV is being rapidly adopted in certain sectors and regions, while others are still catching up.

But one thing is clear: it soon will be everywhere.

Digital Operations Platforms: Guaranteeing human advantage in our technology-driven industry

This year has seen a surge forward for technology in the security industry. What are the implications for the people working in security and their future roles?

The past year has introduced a wave of new technologies and AI advancements in the security industry, often sparking concern about the potential replacement of human roles. However, I firmly believe that, in security, the human touch will always be essential, and security is, at its core, a people-driven industry.

Our industry relies on individuals with the intuition, real-life experience, and adaptability needed to handle complex, often high-stakes situations.

There is one area of technology in particular that makes the human element an even more valuable part of modern security solutions: the digital operations platform.

What is a digital operations platform?

You can think of it as a highly experienced mentor who is always by your side – accessible across a range of devices like a smartphone or a tablet, that can provide support at every step.

Not every officer has the same experience or knowledge, and we all begin as novices. These platforms act like a mentor, placing actionable guidance, crucial information, and support directly in their hands, helping them make informed decisions from day one. It’s like having the right advice, ready to guide your every step for every scenario. This can be invaluable even for seasoned professionals.

Digital operations platforms also streamline day-to-day operations, making it easier for teams to stay focused, organised and on mission.

Centralising key functions such as real-time communication, task management, and incident reporting allows security staff to respond more quickly and effectively than ever before.

Features like GPS tracking and NFC verification increase transparency and accountability, while safety functionality, such as panic buttons, provides operators and clients alike with peace of mind.

However, digital operations platforms can provide much more than day-to-day operational support. Modern digital operations platforms enable real-time communication and data sharing in various formats, from voice and text to photos and videos.

By collecting extensive information about how the teams perform and the incidents and events they encounter, security managers can identify trends, patterns and risks that can be addressed in solution design. Plus, having access to important insights means security teams can spot potential risks early and take action before problems arise. This data-driven approach helps teams work more efficiently, allowing them to stay focused on what matters most: keeping people and assets safe and secure.

While these platforms help us do our jobs better, they can’t replace the smart thinking and instincts that experienced security teams bring to tough situations. This is where the real power lies: the blending of technology and human capability will shape the future of our industry.

Digital operations platforms are one of the finest examples of this. Combining the best of both creates a stronger and more effective security environment. This allows teams to face challenges confidently while keeping the human touch at the centre of what we do.

At Bidvest Noonan, we use Task, our custom-built digital operations platform. At one of our major London sites we’ve integrated multiple services into this single platform. This consolidation has streamlined processes, improved reporting, and helped set new standards for operational performance.

Looking ahead, digital operations platforms hold incredible promise for transforming the security industry. These platforms are built to grow and adapt, allowing security teams to integrate new systems and tools as technology evolves.

For example, the exciting growth of AI and predictive analytics offers huge promise, potentially increasing our ability to spot risks before they even arise, empowering us to act proactively.

The synergy between human insight and technological support will continue to shape the future of our industry, guiding us down an innovative path while keeping us firmly rooted in the irreplaceable strength of the human element.

As we move forward, it’s crucial to strike a balance, recognising that while technology is invaluable, the human touch will always be our greatest asset in overcoming challenges and creating safer environments for everyone we serve.

Purpose-Driven Leadership: Creating safer & healthier communities today for tomorrow

Today, more than ever before, companies are being called upon to look beyond profit and embrace a deeper purpose.

Stakeholders, including employees and customers, increasingly demand that businesses contribute positively to society. This shift reflects a fundamental truth: companies must now play a role in creating a better world.

Employees, especially younger generations, seek meaningful work where their contribution makes a genuine, positive difference in society. Customers, too, are increasingly conscious of the ethical and social implications of their supply chains, favouring companies that do good in the world.

This shift in expectations is supported by research. According to a Deloitte Survey, 87% of executives believe companies perform best over time if their purpose goes beyond profit.

An HBR article reports that nine out of ten people would be willing to earn less money for the chance to do more meaningful work.

Companies that struggle to articulate their purpose or focus solely on hard metrics are more likely to encounter lower employee engagement and higher turnover. On the other hand, companies that truly follow their purpose tend to grow sustainably and earn the trust and loyalty of their employees.

Purpose-driven leadership is about understanding and articulating the ‘why’ behind an organisation’s actions. This clarity of purpose drives business success.

Many companies know ‘what’ they do and ‘how’ they do it, but few pause to consider ‘why’ they do it.

Getting clear on this ‘why’ involves investing time and effort into asking essential questions:

  • What is our core focus?
  • What is our reason for existing?
  • What makes us unique?
  • What difference do we want to make in the world?

This insight helps clearly articulate a purpose statement that is simple, genuine, and relatable. Engaging leaders in shaping the purpose statement and testing it with broader employee cohorts creates a sense of co-creation and ownership across the company. Understanding the ‘why’ is not just a theoretical exercise; it has practical implications that can be seen in successful organisations across different industries. In the 1960s, a janitor at NASA famously described their job as “helping to put a man on the moon,” highlighting how every role was connected to the organisation’s larger mission.

Today, many leading brands continue to recognise the power of purpose. Walt Disney’s mission is “to create happiness for people of all ages, everywhere”. Lego’s goal is “to inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow”, and Nike aims “to move the world forward through the power of sport”.

These purpose statements are simple, easy to communicate, and leverage their unique talents, whether in sport or creativity, to do good in the world. What truly sets these companies apart is their commitment to living and breathing their purpose, making it more than just a slogan on a wall.

Similar to NASA, purpose-led companies strive to connect each employee’s role to the broader company purpose, ensuring they know they make a genuine, positive difference in society.

Purpose-driven leadership is particularly crucial in our industry. Our industry plays a vital role in society. It helps deliver better patient outcomes in hospitals, improves the experience of shoppers and commuters, raises standards in the places that make our food and medicines, and so much more.

Our frontline colleagues are the unsung heroes whose contributions often go unnoticed. Embracing and articulating purpose can highlight these critical roles, creating a sense of pride and appreciation across the industry.

For instance, Elohim, a dedicated contract manager at an acute hospital, encountered a long-term illness patient named Meera, who was battling cancer. Meera had no family nearby, making her journey even more challenging. Elohim and his team went beyond their usual duties, providing not just care, but companionship. Elohim’s daily check-ins became a source of comfort for Meera, and they bonded over stories of her life in India and shared recipes.

As months passed, Meera’s condition remained serious, but her family, who lived overseas, managed to travel to be with her. In a heartfelt moment, she introduced Elohim and his team to her family as her friends. This experience underscored the profound impact of their work, highlighting that their roles extended far beyond FM services.

This story perfectly exemplifies Bidvest Noonan’s purpose to proudly create safer and healthier communities today, for tomorrow. For nearly 50 years, Bidvest Noonan has played an essential role supporting customers, colleagues and communities. This purpose, brought to life by the passion and pride of our people, will enable another 50 years of success and positive impact on the world.

Purpose-driven leadership is not just a trend; it’s a necessity for creating safer and healthier communities. By embracing our purpose, we can create a future where businesses thrive by contributing to the greater good.

Balancing security with community

London is renowned for its vibrant and dynamic public spaces. The city is home to some of the most exciting and diverse mixed-use environments that blend residential areas, offices, retail outlets, and cultural hotspots.

When designing security solutions for these spaces the primary challenge lies in establishing robust security measures that do not detract from the welcoming and open atmosphere these areas provide. The goal is to ensure the security, safety, and well-being of everyone, from residents and commuters to tourists, without imposing an overbearing presence.

Designing effective security solutions for busy public spaces is intricate work. The foundational approach begins with a comprehensive assessment of the assets requiring protection. This encompasses not just the physical property but also the intangible elements like the area’s ambience and the customer’s brand.

The next step often involves a thorough analysis of potential threats. This includes identifying both internal and external risks. Threat identification is an ongoing process, benefitting from strong platforms and highly networked teams who can use data to develop intel for advanced warning of potential threats. It is important to be ahead of the curve in this area. An in-depth understanding of all threats allows for the quantification of their potential impact, guiding the development of responsive and proactive security strategies.

Central to the design of these security solutions are three key pillars: people, procedures, and technology. By harmoniously integrating these pillars, security solutions can be crafted to provide comprehensive protection while maintaining the unique character of the spaces being protected. The goal is to create a robust and multi-layered security solution, capable of adapting to the evolving needs and challenges of these dynamic environments. There are many additional considerations when designing solutions for public spaces.

Public spaces are melting pots of individuals, each with distinct needs and expectations and embracing inclusivity in these spaces has become a cornerstone of modern security solution design. This means designing measures that cater to all, ensuring everyone feels safe and acknowledged.

In this context, security solution designers increasingly call on security personnel to adopt roles that go well beyond traditional duties. They are asked to perform as ambassadors and customer service representatives, trained not only in security and safety procedures but also in skills such as empathy, communication, and cultural sensitivity.

In a city as diverse as London, communication barriers can be a significant challenge. Training and careful recruitment can help bridge the gap and there are many small and simple steps teams can take to improve their accessibility to the public.

For example, some of our security teams wear ‘language flags’ on their uniforms. These small, embroidered patches indicate the languages an officer is fluent in, thereby inviting non-English speakers to communicate in their preferred language. This simple but effective tool not only eases communication but also demonstrates a commitment to inclusivity.

The scope of health and safety in modern security has expanded significantly, encompassing advanced medical training, and enhanced rapid response capabilities. This evolution reflects a broader responsibility of security teams, not only in preventing and addressing security incidents but also in responding effectively to health emergencies.

Security personnel are increasingly equipped with medical training that goes beyond basic first aid. This includes specialised courses such as First Person on Scene Intermediate (FPOSi), which provides them with the skills to manage a range of medical conditions and trauma-related injuries.

This advanced medical knowledge enables security teams to act as first responders in emergency situations, able to administer potentially life-saving care while waiting for medical professionals to arrive. This capability is especially crucial in high-traffic public spaces where a range of medical emergencies, from minor injuries to serious health crises, can occur.

Good solution design often incorporates technologies that enhance security operations and provide data for continuous improvements. Although many security companies manage well with traditional systems and methods of working, in an era where data is invaluable, modern technology can have a huge impact on performance.

For example, while many companies find paper-based occurrence logs to be adequate, for high footfall public spaces switching to a sophisticated digital system can make a significant difference.

This can facilitate the analysis of data to identify trends and make informed decisions about resource allocation, identify areas for additional surveillance or patrols, and continually refine their security strategies.

There are so many other areas where technologies can enhance security operations in these spaces, from body-worn cameras offering real-time recording to enhance accountability and safety, to advanced radio systems which ensure seamless communication among team members and even colleagues on other sites.

The art of creating secure yet inviting public spaces lies in the delicate balance between safety and openness. By integrating empathetic, culturally sensitive, and highly trained personnel, advanced technologies, and strategic planning, our industry can achieve the highest standards of security while preserving the vibrancy and inclusivity of our public spaces.

In preparation for the introduction of Martyn’s Law, Liz Cummins, Managing Director, London Security Solutions at Bidvest Noonan, held a conference that brought together over 100 stakeholders and subject matter experts such as Figen Murray to discuss the implications for the industry. We asked Liz about the Law and key takeaways from the conference.

Q: What are the key components of Martyn’s Law?

A: The Law will require stronger partnerships between the property management sector, their security partners, and law enforcement agencies. It will also require joint risk assessments and the implementation of proportionate security measures to maintain public safety.

Speaking at our event, Figen explained that her proposal set five straightforward measures that we should follow to maintain public safety. These include engaging in free counter-terrorism guidance and training, conducting terrorism risk assessments, mitigating any risks identified in these assessments, working with local authorities to create a strategy, and establishing a counter-terrorism action plan.

Q: Why is this Law important?

A: The introduction of Martyn’s Law is a crucial step towards ensuring public safety in the UK, and it carries profound implications for the security professionals and public venues across the UK.

There is an ever-present threat of terrorism. The UK has experienced several terrorist attacks resulting in fatalities since the Manchester Arena tragedy, underscoring the need for better security measures. This creates a need for new ways to respond. It is our responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of those around us, and by operating in compliance with Martyn’s Law, we can do just that. Martyn’s Law will help prevent terrorist attacks and reassure occupiers, clients, and visitors that they are safe when attending public venues and events. Martyn’s Law will help us prevent acts of terrorism, reassure the public, and increase safety and security.

Q: Does technology have a role to play?

A: Yes, as in many fields, technology can be a real enabler. Although older technologies such as access control systems and vehicle barriers are still very important, there are new technologies which offer lots of promise. For example, facial recognition technology advances are already helping police to identify and apprehend suspected terrorists, while big data and machine learning help analyse and interpret vast amounts of information in real time, keeping potential threats at bay.

At the conference, we also examined the ProtectUK app, which is hailed as a central hub for counter-terrorism and protective security advice. The app assists users in identifying vulnerabilities and linking   them to the best resources to ensure their security measures are in place.

However, technology alone is not enough. Other measures will be needed such as improved training to ensure security teams are familiar with new procedures and can respond effectively in emergency situations.

Q: What kind of training will need to be provided?

A: Venue operators and their security partners may need to provide their teams with additional and proportionate training in security procedures, emergency response, and communication with visitors and law enforcement officials. This could include identifying potential security risks, responding in emergency situations, and using new security technologies or measures introduced. Additionally, staff should be trained in basic first aid and emergency medical procedures to ensure they are prepared to handle any injury situations. I believe it is important to be proactive in areas like this. For example, our team at Battersea Power Station has undergone specialised training including First Person on Scene training. This enables the team to assess and treat individuals who are experiencing serious medical emergencies, helping to ensure the safety and well-being of people using the area.

Q: How can property owners and operators prepare for Martyn’s Law?

A: Property owners and operators can start by conducting risk assessments of their public spaces to identify any potential security risks and areas that may need improvement. They should also consult with security experts and law enforcement officials to ensure they are taking appropriate measures to secure their public spaces. Staff training should focus on the new law’s requirements, including security procedures, emergency response, and communication. Finally, property owners may want to invest in additional security measures to enhance their public spaces’ safety.

Although implementing new counter-terrorism measures will require an investment of time and resources, the benefits of increased safety and security cannot be overstated. Ultimately, the implementation of the Law is an essential step forward in ensuring public safety in the UK.

See our Counter Terrorism category for more articles on the Protect Duty.
